Provincial Survey Results

In November 2012, the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC) asked the Ontario Paramedic Association (OPA) to complete an application to regulate paramedics under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, in response to a request from the Minister of Health. One component of this application asked the OPA to “describe any consultation process undertaken" to determine whether “members of the profession/association want self-regulation". In 2013 the OPA conducted an online survey that was open to all Ontario paramedics.

The online survey was conducted between February 26 and March 11, 2013 using FluidSurveys (Chide.it Inc.), and was publicized through the OPA's website, through Facebook and Twitter, on the website of associated organizations such as the Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa and the Toronto Paramedic Association, and through email. The survey was sent out on February 26, 2013 by the OPA to the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs with a request to forward it to all paramedic employees. Paramedic Self-Reg Survey Results (2013)

The Ontario Paramedic Association's open survey for paramedic self-regulation revealed the following results:

74.4% “strongly" or “very strongly" support paramedic self-regulation
7.3% neither agreed or disagreed
18.3% were opposed

These results showed an increase in support of more than 11% since the OPA's first survey in 2005, in which 63% of Ontario paramedics supported self-regulation.
